Two Repetitive-Motion Injuries That Need Knee Pain Treatment

Over half of all injuries that lead people to seek knee pain treatment are a result of repetitive motion injuries. This means that there is no sudden traumatic event that caused the knee pain, but a buildup of stress gradually over time eventually causes enough discomfort to become noticeable. Unfortunately, we only have the one set of knees that is supposed to last a lifetime. It is important to understand the two most common repetitive motion injuries that cause enough pain for people to search for knee pain treatment.

Tendonitis

Tendons are fibrous tissues that connect bone and muscle that allow movement in your joints. Tendons must be strong enough to bear the full weight of the attached muscle. Tendonitis is characterized by pain and inflammation of the tendons and common causes for this condition include:

  • Jogging or running
  • Jumping and jump heavy sports like basketball or volleyball
  • Overuse from strength exercises such as squats
  • Being overweight which puts extra strain on the knees

Fortunately, many cases of tendonitis can be resolved by simply resting the knee and slowly easing back into exercise. However, if your tendonitis gets worse or doesn’t improve after resting, then you should consider knee pain treatment to get you back in action.

Bursitis

Bursa sacs develop in areas between the tendon and bone and serve to lubricate these areas where friction is caused. Bursitis is an inflammation of these sacs and in the knee usually occurs below the kneecap and can have symptoms including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Loss of range of motion
  • A crunchy feeling or sound when the knee is moved

To relieve the symptoms of bursitis, the RICE method of rest, ice, compression and elevation is recommended. However, bursitis can become chronic, and if the pain is acute physical therapy, surgery or other knee pain treatment may be necessary to relieve symptoms.

Some people believe that aches and pains are a natural part of getting older, but there are options to help relieve your knee pain. Physical therapy is a great non-surgical option that can help provide people with a reduction in their knee pain symptoms.
